Hard water and eczema
Hard water damages our protective skin barrier and could contribute
to the development of eczema.
Researchers from a new study found that exposing the skin to hard water damages the skin barrier – our natural defence against outside threats such as bacteria or sunburn. This then increases the sensitivity of the skin to potential irritants found in everyday wash products, such as soap or washing powder.
The minerals in hard water were found to bind to surfactants (detergents, wetting agents) and make them insoluble. These then precipitate (stick) onto the skin. For example, when having a shower in hard water, the shower gel binds to the hard water minerals and sticks to the skin instead of washing away.
